2D materials have heralded a new dawn in the field of tweaking properties of material. Hitherto unexplored applications have been made possible by these materials. There are many 2D materials for research like Graphene that are finding new applications every day. However, most of the researchers are focusing their attention on Graphene. It is being hailed as the new wonder material that can solve different problems.

2D Materials For Research

The journey of 2d material started with the discovery and synthesis of Graphene in 2004. The involved scientists were awarded with Nobel Prize and it lead to a spurt in 2D materials for research. These single layer materials are opening up a completely new world of material properties. The first such material developed was Graphene. However, a number of other 2D materials were also developed after Graphene.

Even Graphene can be synthetized in a number of ways and in different forms. Studies have also found that blending different types of Graphene can give rise to LED lights that have the ability emit light throughout the visible spectrum of light. This can give rise to LED lights with changeable colors meaning that only one light can have flexible displays.

2D materials have miraculous properties. Graphene, which is also a 2D material, is very efficient in transferring momentum owing to its lattice structure. This can be very useful in designing bulletproof materials sine it can dissipate the impact energy across a very wide area. It has been found that 300 layers of Graphene can stop a microbullet. Research on this particular property of Graphene is going on and the latest research has come out with even higher ability.

Graphene has many other properties too. Research on all these properties is going on and there is a likelihood of Graphene based products coming in the market in the decades to come. It implies that bulletproof jackets, trains, plans, automobiles et all may become possible in future.

Other 2d Materials Under Research

Nevertheless, Graphene is already experiencing commercialization. Various sensors made with Graphene are already in wide production and use. Among the other 2d materials is Germanene which was synthesized in 2014. While Graphene has a honeycomb or hexagonal structure, Germanene crystals have a buckled structure with two separated sub-lattices making up a single lattice.

Research on the properties of Graphene and other 2D materials is going on. Scientists are experiencing with various 2 D materials for research. Meanwhile research is also going on a heterogenous structure of different 2D materials for research. These are designed from stacks of germanene, graphene, silicene, stanene etc.
